The Indian market is flourishing right now. The twenty-first century has proven to be the most fruitful period for India’s transformation into a worldwide economic powerhouse, with an influx of FDI and new businesses. Taking advantage of emerging trends and seeing problems that needed to be addressed, some engineers devised novel solutions and started profitable businesses.
Let’s have a look at 6 Indian engineer entrepreneurs that have built profitable businesses. These businesses were founded by engineers with a vision and are now thriving.
1. Infosys – N. R. Narayan Murthy
By far one of the most well-known names in the corporate world, nearly no one hasn’t heard of it. With six other people, he started the IT juggernaut Infosys, which has grown to be an IT behemoth with superb infrastructure and revenue in the billions of dollars. Mr Murthy is an engineer by training and was one of the first Indian companies to grow large enough to be listed on NASDAQ. In 1969, he graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, with a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
2. Zerodha – Nitin Kamath
Nithin Kamath is another well-known business figure. Zerodha was started in 2010 by him and his brother Nikhil, who is also an engineer. Zerodha, a startup that makes money easier for everyone, is now worth over $1 billion and has over a million active users. Nithin discovered that technology can be utilised to power stock market trading, commodities market trading, mutual fund trading, and bond trading, among other things. He then chose to take advantage of India’s existing IT infrastructure in order to become the firm that it is today.
3. Onida – Vijay Mansukhani
The name Vijay Mansukhani definitely doesn’t ring a bell for today’s age. Vijay, a marine engineer turned entrepreneur, launched the Indian television company Onida, which revolutionised the consumer durables sector in the 1980s and 1990s. His company immediately gained a household name as one of the pioneers of colour television, which was a novelty in India at the time. Vijay worked as a merchant navy engineer in Iran before deciding to pursue a career in business.

His company provides kids’ clothing in combo packs, which parents love because they don’t want to go to the store every time their children need new outfits.
5. Pepperfry – Ambareesh Murthy
Ambareesh Murty founded Pepperfry, another firm that has become a unicorn. Pepperfry studios can now be found all throughout India, and the brand has become nearly synonymous with the term “online furniture purchasing.” Ambareesh, like all other feature entrepreneurs today, comes from an engineering background and has revolutionised the way Indians purchase furniture, both for short and extended periods of time.
6. Flipkart – Sachin Bansal
Sachin Bansal, arguably one of the most well-known Indian entrepreneurs of the twenty-first century, founded Flipkart, which initially sold books.
